He learnt to read Gurmukh&#299 and the Sikh Scripture at the hands of an Ud&#257s&#299 priest, Gi&#257n&#299 Prem D&#257s, and continued further religious study under different scholars and theologians, including Sant Khaz&#257n Si&#7749gh Virakt of Sukkho in R&#257walpi&#7751&#7693&#299 district (now in Pakistan) . The death register of the Municipal Committee of Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257 where he died shows him, in the parentage column, as chel&#257 or disciple of Sant Gul&#257b Si&#7749gh. Such was Sant Jav&#257l&#257 Si&#7749gh's reputation as a scholar that he was in 1905 appointed to instruct Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Bh&#363pinder Si&#7749gh of Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257 (1891-1938), then a young prince of 14, in Sikh texts and doctrine. Brought up in the austere way of a Nirmal&#257 s&#257dh&#363, Sant Jav&#257l&#257 Si&#7749gh now adopted the attire of a courtier, though he remained at heart a deeply religious person. Collection of rare articles became one of his hobbies. He also wrote humorous verse in Braj. However, none of his writings has survived, except a six-page S&#299harf&#299 Ved&#257nt Svar&#363p Bodhan&#299, published in 1892. It is an acrostic in Punjabi, in baint metre, based on letters of the Persian alphabet.

Sant Jav&#257l&#257 Si&#7749gh died at Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257 on 24 March 1938 in a stampede occurring in the funeral procession of his own pupil, Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Bh&#363pinder Si&#7749gh.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Ganesh&#257 Si&#7749gh, Mahant, Nirmal Bh&#363shan arth&#257t Itih&#257s Nirmal Bhekh.
