His schooling was interrupted owing to his father's death. But the desire to learn was so strong in him that at the age of 26, he joined the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 Prach&#257rak Vidy&#257l&#257, Tarn T&#257ran, and spent four years there studying Sikh history and philosophy, besides practising <i>k&#299rtan</i>. In 1915 he joined the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 school at Jhab&#257l in Amritsar district as a Punjabi teacher. &#298shar Si&#7749gh returned to his native place to become the custodian of the village <i>gurdw&#257r&#257</i>.
