Around 1906, the family migrated to Chakk No. 33 Dh&#257rov&#257l&#299 in Shei<u>kh</u>upur&#257 district in search of a better living. At Dh&#257rov&#257l&#299 contact with Lachhma&#7751 Si&#7749gh, who was a devout Sikh, changed the course of his life. He started to learn reading and writing Gurmukh&#299 and went through the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 rites of <i>p&#257hul</i>. He journeyed with him to the Nank&#257&#7751&#257 S&#257hib and was in his <i>jath&#257</i> of Ak&#257l&#299 reformers which was massacred to a man on the fateful morning of 20 February 1921. <i>See</i> NANK&#256&#7750&#256 S&#256HIB MASSACRE.
