But Hukam Si&#7749gh himself remained illiterate. By the time he reached his paternal home he had grown up into a strong and lusty youth. He was married at the age of 14.

After the opening of the Lower Chen&#257b Canal Colony, the family got land and settled permanently in Chakk No. 91 Dhann&#363&#257&#7751&#257 in Lyallpur district. Early during the 20th century Hukam Si&#7749gh, during one of his biennial pilgrimage visits to Anandpur S&#257hib, received the rites of Kh&#257ls&#257 p&#257hul. Every year he visited the holy Nank&#257&#7751&#257. As time went by, he grew increasingly conscious of the maladministration of the shrines and of the depravity of the mahants who controlled them. Most notorious among them was Mahant Narai&#7751 D&#257s, custodian of the holy Nank&#257&#7751&#257. As the call for the liberation of the Nank&#257&#7751&#257 rang out, Hukam Si&#7749gh forthwith joined the jath&#257 of Bh&#257&#299 Lachhma&#7751 Si&#7749gh Dh&#257rov&#257l&#299, and attained martyrdom on 20 February 1921. See NANK&#256&#7750&#256 S&#256HIB MASSACRE.
