He attended the village primary school and trained as a scripture-reader and as a singer of the holy hymns. He was a member of the village choir and recited with gusto ballads of Sikh martyrs. Har&#299 Si&#7749gh grew up into a handsome, lusty youth and excelled in rural sports such as wrestling, weight-lifting and <i>k&#257ba&#7693&#7693&#299</i>. He enlisted in the army and served for some time in 27th Punjab (later 3/15 Punjab Regiment), and got his discharge at the end of the Great War in 1918. Meanwhile, his friend and mentor, Bh&#257&#299 Nand Si&#7749gh, had also resigned from the army and returned home. Both received the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 <i>p&#257hul</i>, and set up a platform for reciting <i>gurb&#257&#7751&#299</i> and preaching the Si&#7749gh Sabh&#257 creed. Har&#299 Si&#7749gh joined the Ak&#257l&#299 ranks and volunteered his services during the Gurdw&#257r&#257 Rik&#257bgañj agitation. On receiving the call for the liberation of Gurdw&#257r&#257 Janam Asth&#257n at Nank&#257&#7751&#257 S&#257hib, he along with Bh&#257&#299 N&#257nd Si&#7749gh joined the <i>jath&#257</i> of Bh&#257&#299 Lachhma&#7751 Si&#7749gh of Dh&#257rov&#257l&#299 and attained martyrdom on 20 February 1921.
