First published in 1893 and comprising sixteen pages, the Gurpra&#7751&#257l&#299 was prepared at the instance of the Gurmat Prach&#257rak Sabh&#257 with a view "to familiarizing the Sikh youth with their history." The author states that his dates are based on historical works scrutinized and revised under the auspices of the Sr&#299 Gur&#363 Si&#7749gh Sabh&#257, Amritsar, yet some of them do not coincide with those commonly accepted in the Sikh tradition. For example, it records Ass&#363 vad&#299 10, 1596 Bk, as the date of Gur&#363 N&#257nak's death against the current Ass&#363 sud&#299 10, 1596 Bk; Vais&#257kh sud&#299 1, 1561 Bk as the date of Gur&#363 A&#7749gad's birth against the current Vais&#257kh vad&#299 1, 1561 Bk; H&#257&#7771 vad&#299 1, 1652 Bk, the date of Gur&#363 Hargobind's birth against the current H&#257&#7771 vad&#299 6, 1652 Bk. Whereas almost all the earlier Gurpra&#7751&#257l&#299s state that Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh had passed on the gur&#363ship to the Kh&#257ls&#257, this one says that, though Kh&#257ls&#257 is the son of Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh, the status of Gur&#363 was bestowed upon Scripture, the Gur&#363 Granth S&#257hib. The Gurpra&#7751&#257l&#299 lists some of the kurahits or misconducts, i.e. violations of the code of conduct a Sikh must avoid. Among them are mentioned smoking, shaving and social intercourse with the schismatic groups such as M&#299&#7751&#257s and Dh&#299rmall&#299&#257s.

Dharam Si&#7749gh
