During the second Anglo-Sikh war, Gurmukh Si&#7749gh assisted Mah&#257r&#257j Si&#7749gh in procuring supplies of food and fodder for the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 army. He also used to cook for him and this earned him the epithet <i>l&#257&#7749gar&#299</i> (lit. a cook). When Mah&#257r&#257j Si&#7749gh re-entered the Do&#257b&#257 region, Gurmukh Si&#7749gh helped him contact many influential local men needed for a projected raid on government treasury at Bajv&#257&#7771&#257, near Hoshi&#257rpur.
