Death by torture had been ordered by Emperor Jah&#257&#7749g&#299r himself and Chand&#363 Sh&#257h had, out of personal rancour, taken upon himself the responsibility of carrying out the imperial fiat. Gurditt&#257, a poor bha&#7789hi&#257r&#257 or gram-parcher by trade, was told to heat up an iron plate placed over a big hearth. Gur&#363 Arjan was made to sit on the red-hot plate and Gurditt&#257 was ordered to pour hot sand over his body. The torture ended in Gur&#363 Arjan's death. Years later, when Jah&#257&#7749g&#299r was reconciled to Gur&#363 Arjan's son and successor, Gur&#363 Hargobind, he had Chand&#363 Sh&#257h handed over to the Gur&#363 to be dealt with according to his deserts. Chand&#363 Sh&#257h was paraded in the streets of Lahore and subjected to insult and shoe-beating by the people. As he was taken to the street where Gurditt&#257 Bha&#7789hi&#257r&#257 practised his trade, the latter, filled with contempt and anger, threw the heavy laddle he had, under his orders, used to pour hot sand over Gur&#363 Arjan's blistered frame, at him saying, in the words of Bh&#257&#299 Santokh Si&#7749gh, Sr&#299 Gur Prat&#257p S&#363raj Granth, "Keep away, you arch-sinner, and do not cast your evil shadow upon me." The hot laddle hit Chand&#363 Sh&#257h in the stomach and killed him.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Santokh Si&#7749gh, Bh&#257&#299, Sr&#299 Gur Prat&#257p S&#363raj Granth.
