He studied up to matriculation. He enjoyed the patronage of &#7788ikk&#257 (later Mah&#257r&#257j&#257) Ripudaman Si&#7749gh of N&#257bh&#257, whom he accompanied to England in 1910. On return from abroad in 1912, he joined the seminary at Bhi&#7751&#7693ar Kal&#257&#7749 run by Sant Sundar Si&#7749gh where he studied Sikh theological and historical texts. When the first Shiroma&#7751&#299 Gurdw&#257r&#257 Parbandhak Committee was formed in November 1920, Gurdi&#257l Si&#7749gh was nominated a member. He was one of those who persuaded the Committee to take up the question of the forced abdication and dethronement of the N&#257bh&#257 ruler, Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ripudaman Si&#7749gh, in July 1923. Consequent upon the launching of what is known as the Jaito morch&#257 or agitation to protest against the government's action, the Shiroma&#7751&#299 Gurdw&#257r&#257 Parbandhak Committee was outlawed and its members put behind the bars. Sant Gurdi&#257l Si&#7749gh was arrested on 7 January 1924 and imprisoned in Mult&#257n Central Jail. While under detention he used to give discourses on gurb&#257&#7751&#299 for the benefit of his jail-mates. On release in 1926, he went back to Sant Sundar Si&#7749gh, who appointed him jathed&#257r in charge of a newly established gurdw&#257r&#257 and missionary centre at Bop&#257 R&#257i, a village in Ludhi&#257&#7751&#257 district. He was elected to the Shiroma&#7751&#299 Gurdw&#257r&#257 Parbandhak Committee in 1945. Besides teaching regular students at the seminary, Sant Gurdi&#257l Si&#7749gh delivered a serialized discourse on the entire Gur&#363 Granth S&#257hib spread over a whole year. He had given 23 such annual series before he died at Bop&#257 R&#257i Kal&#257&#7749 on 28 March 1958.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Ashok, Shamsher Si&#7749gh, Shiroma&#7751&#299 Gurdw&#257r&#257 Parbandhak Committee d&#257 Pañj&#257h S&#257l&#257 Itih&#257s.
