He received Sikh initiatory rites at the hands of the revered Bh&#257&#299 Man&#299 Si&#7749gh at Amritsar in the time of Naw&#257b Zakar&#299y&#257 <u>Kh</u>&#257n of Lahore. As a mark of mutual friendliness, he exchanged turbans with Karo&#7771&#257 Si&#7749gh, the Karo&#7771si&#7749gh&#299&#257 <i>misl</i> chief, and participated in several expeditions of the Dal <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257. At the time of the conquest of Sirhind in January 1764, he seized the <i>parganah</i> of Chhachhraul&#299, now in Jag&#257dhar&#299 <i>tahs&#299l</i> of Hary&#257&#7751&#257, comprising 114 villages, and founded an independent principality called Kals&#299&#257 after the name of his native village. He captured Bambel&#299 <i>parganah</i> in Hoshi&#257rpur district and collected immense wealth from different places in Hary&#257&#7751&#257 and R&#257jasth&#257n. Some of his villages had been seized by R&#257j&#257 Amar Si&#7749gh of Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257 which he later recovered.
