He entered the service of Lahi&#7751&#257 Si&#7749gh Maj&#299&#7789h&#299&#257 as a gunner in 1828, and was made a commandant in 1835. Up to the death of Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh, Gul&#257b Si&#7749gh had been a feudal retainer of the Maj&#299&#7789hia Sard&#257r, but, on the accession of Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Sher Si&#7749gh in 1841, he entered the regular army. He was made a colonel in the artillery with a command of eleven guns. Under R&#257j&#257 H&#299r&#257 Si&#7749gh, he was promoted general. In 1853, Gul&#257b Si&#7749gh left the Punjab with Lahi&#7751&#257 Si&#7749gh Maj&#299&#7789h&#299&#257 for Ban&#257ras, returning home the following year. In 1863, he was appointed guardian of Lahi&#7751&#257 Si&#7749gh's only son, Dy&#257l Si&#7749gh.
