According to its autobiographical stanzas 7-16, Girdhar L&#257l was the son of Gaj Mall, a Khatr&#299 of Ga&#7693iyal clan. The family came originally from Mult&#257n but after a stay at Sa&#7693haur&#257, now in Yamun&#257nagar district of Hary&#257&#7751&#257, had settled at Lahore. From there Dv&#257rk&#257 D&#257s, great-great-grandfather of Girdhar L&#257I, had shifted to &#256gr&#257 at the instance of Muzaffar <u>Kh</u>&#257n, an Af<u>gh</u>&#257n noble. Girdhar L&#257l received education in Braj literature and prosody at the hands of a Br&#257hma&#7751 scholar, Hriday R&#257m. He had commenced writing <i>Pi&#7749gal S&#257r</i> at &#256gr&#257, but completed it at P&#257o&#7751&#7789&#257 in Magghar 1745 Bk/November 1688.
