Once he, accompanied by Bh&#257&#299 H&#257&#7771&#363, also a Vij, and Bh&#257&#299 Chatur D&#257s and Bh&#257&#299 M&#363l&#257, both Kap&#363r Khatr&#299s, waited upon the Gur&#363 and raised a question. They said, "While the advice of all other holy men is for the seeker to keep wakeful nights in meditation, Gur&#363 N&#257nak had in one of his <i>&#347lokas</i> suggested that all effort was futile, for the reward, if He pleases, would come even during sleep." Gur&#363 Arjan, says Bh&#257&#299 Man&#299 Si&#7749gh, <i>Sikh&#257&#7749 d&#299 Bhagat M&#257l&#257,</i> explained to them the correct import of the <i>&#347loka.</i> The Gur&#363 said, "Remember, it is not the learned, proud of their accomplishment, who are blessed with <i>gi&#257n</i> or true knowledge, but the simple illiterates who seek with humility and dedication.
