Sh&#257h Mahm&#363d was dethroned in 1803 and was succeeded by Sh&#257h Shuj&#257'. Fateh Kh&#257n expelled Sh&#257h Shuj&#257' in 1809 and restored Sh&#257h Mahm&#363d to sovereignty. Sh&#257h Shuj&#257' fell into the hands of 'At&#257 Muhammad Kh&#257n,, the governor of Kashm&#299r. As Kashm&#299r was the richest province of the kingdom of Afghanistan, Fateh Kh&#257n turned his attention towards ' At&#257 Muhammad Kh&#257n. He concluded a treaty with Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh for a joint expedition to Kashm&#299r which was undertaken in 1812. 'At&#257 Muhammad was defeated and replaced by Fateh Kh&#257n's real brother, Muhammad 'Az&#299m Kh&#257n, but Fateh Kh&#257n did not fulfill the terms of the treaty, and the Sikh general, D&#299w&#257n Mohkam Chand, seized Sh&#257h Shuj&#257' who was brought to Lahore. Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh took Attock in June 1813. Fateh Kh&#257n and his brother, Dost Muhammad Kh&#257n, made an attempt to regain the fort, but were defeated by D&#299w&#257n Mohkam Chand. Recovery of Attock remained the dream of Fateh Kh&#257n till his death in 1818.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

S&#363r&#299, Sohan L&#257l, 'Udm&#257t-ut-Tw&#257r&#299kh.
