He learnt to read the Gur&#363 Granth S&#257hib in the village <i>gurdw&#257r&#257</i> and enlisted in an infantry battalion at Poon&#257 in his early youth. He served for 20 years and had received a gallantry award before he retired on a monthly pension of Rs 4. Di&#257l Si&#7749gh had married but had no offspring. Shortly before the happenings at Nank&#257&#7751&#257 S&#257hib, he attended a <i>d&#299v&#257n</i> (Sikh religious congregation) at Chakk No. 75 Lahuke where he took the initiatory vows of the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 at the hands of Bh&#257&#299 Narai&#7751 Si&#7749gh, and offered himself as a volunteer for the <i>jath&#257</i> or band of Bh&#257&#299 Lachhma&#7751 Si&#7749gh of Dh&#257rov&#257l&#299.
