His grandfather Gu&#7789&#363 Mall, who belonged to Sh&#257hpur district, was employed as <i>d&#299w&#257n</i> to the Bha&#7749g&#299 <i>sard&#257rs</i>, Gujjar Si&#7749gh and S&#257hib Si&#7749gh, regulating the civil affairs of a large tract of land under those chiefs. Dhanpat R&#257i's father, R&#257m Kum&#257r, succeeded Gu&#7789&#363 Mall and held the office until 1810 when Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh occupied S&#257hib Si&#7749gh's estates. R&#257m Kum&#257r obtained places for Dhanpat R&#257i and his other two sons in the Sikh government. Dhanpat R&#257i was granted <i>j&#257g&#299rs</i> at Maj&#299&#7789h&#257 and Jagdeo which in the year 1814 were exchanged for the territory of Sodhr&#257 belonging previously to S&#257hib Si&#7749gh. Dhanpat R&#257i was handed over the charge of the M&#257jh&#257 area. He was afterwards appointed commander of Prince Kha&#7771ak Si&#7749gh's force which post he held for more than a year.
