His father, Indar Si&#7749gh, could barely afford to send him to the village primary school where Dhann&#257 Si&#7749gh learnt to read and write in Punjabi and Urdu. Early in his youth he was converted to radical politics by Karam Si&#7749gh, of Daulatpur, leader of the Chakravart&#299 Jath&#257, and helped organize the Jath&#257's major d&#299v&#257ns at M&#257halpur (March 1921) and at Kukka&#7771 Muz&#257r&#257 (October 1921). The Chakravart&#299 Jath&#257s of Kishan Si&#7749gh Ga&#7771gajj and Karam Si&#7749gh merging together made up plans at a meeting at Jassov&#257l on 25 December 1922 to maim, plunder or murder informers and helpers of the British government. Dhann&#257 Si&#7749gh was assigned to "liquidating" Arjan Si&#7749gh, a pa&#7789v&#257r&#299, who had caused the arrest of Master Mot&#257 Si&#7749gh in June 1922. He, along with B&#363&#7789&#257 Si&#7749gh and S&#257dh&#257 Si&#7749gh, of Pa&#7751&#7693or&#299 Nijjhr&#257&#7749, made attempts on the life of Arjan Si&#7749gh. He was also involved in the murders of B&#363&#7789&#257, lambard&#257r of Na&#7749gal Sh&#257m&#257&#7749, Haz&#257r&#257 Si&#7749gh of Bahibalpur and L&#257bh Si&#7749gh, a mistr&#299 of Ga&#7771hsha&#7749kar, who had had Kishan Si&#7749gh Ga&#7771gajj arrested in February 1923. Dhann&#257 Si&#7749gh himself fell victim to a ruse. Jav&#257l&#257 Si&#7749gh, described as a "black sheep" of the Babar Ak&#257l&#299s, acting in collusion with a police sub inspector, Gulz&#257r&#257 Si&#7749gh, lured Dhann&#257 Si&#7749gh to Mannanh&#257&#7751&#257 village, in Hoshi&#257rpur, where Mr Horton, the British superintendent of police, and his party reached on the midnight of 25-26 October 1923. Dhann&#257 Si&#7749gh was overpowered but, displaying remarkable presence of mind, he had his hand released with a sudden jerk and crashed into one of the officers holding him, simultaneously pulling out the safety pin of the bomb which he always carried hidden around his waist. Dhann&#257 Si&#7749gh was torn to pieces by the explosion, but so were his captors. Two head constables and three constables died on the spot, sub-inspector Gulz&#257r&#257 Si&#7749gh and another constable died at M&#257halpur on their way to hospital, and Mr Horton at Hoshi&#257rpur.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Babbar, Sundar Si&#7749gh, Itih&#257s Babbar Ak&#257l&#299 Lahir.
