His father, Harday&#257l, was the younger brother of Bh&#257&#299 Gav&#257ld&#257s who, according to the Bha&#7789&#7789 Vah&#299s, had accompanied Gur&#363 Te<u>gh</u> Bah&#257dur during his visit to the eastern provinces; and Bh&#257&#299 Chaup&#257 Si&#7749gh, author of one of the Rahitn&#257m&#257s, was his grand-uncle. Chandra Sain Sain&#257pati, another of Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh's poets, in his <i>Sukh Sain Granth</i>, acknowledges Dev&#299 D&#257s to be his teacher. Manuscripts of three of Dev&#299 D&#257s's works - <i>R&#257jn&#299t&#299, Si&#7749gh-Ga&#363 k&#299 Kath&#257</i> and <i>Lav Kus d&#299 V&#257r</i> -- survive.
