When her husband died in 1770, their eldest son, Mah&#257&#7749 Si&#7749gh, was barely ten years old. M&#257&#299 Des&#257&#7749 took the control of the Sukkarchakk&#299&#257 misl or chiefship into her own hands, and showed uncommon sagacity and courage in administering its affairs. She had the advantage of the advice of her brothers, Gurbakhsh Si&#7749gh and Dal Si&#7749gh, and of the support of Jai Si&#7749gh of the Kanhaiya misl. One of the first tasks she undertook was the rebuilding of the fort at Gujr&#257&#7749w&#257l&#257 which had been destroyed by Ahmad Sh&#257h Durr&#257n&#299. She renamed the new fort Mah&#257&#7749 Si&#7749gh k&#299 Ga&#7771h&#299. She brought further strength to the misl by securing influential matrimonial alliances for her children. She married off her daughter, R&#257j Kaur, to S&#257hib Si&#7749gh, of the Bha&#7749g&#299 misl, and her son, Mah&#257&#7749 Si&#7749gh, to the daughter of the R&#257j&#257 of J&#299nd.
