In 1844, D&#299w&#257n Lakkh&#299 Mall died and Daulat R&#257i was allowed to succeed him in his office by Waz&#299r H&#299r&#257 Si&#7749gh on payment of a <i>nazar&#257n&#257</i> or tribute of 50, 000 rupees. He also became the governor of &#7788o&#7749k wrested from Fateh <u>Kh</u>&#257n &#7788iw&#257&#7751&#257 by D&#299w&#257n Lakkh&#299 Mall a few months before his death. On the death of Waz&#299r H&#299r&#257 Si&#7749gh, Jaw&#257har Si&#7749gh became the prime minister. Fateh <u>Kh</u>&#257n &#7788iw&#257&#7751&#257, who was Jaw&#257har Si&#7749gh's supporter, was appointed governor of &#7692er&#257 Ism&#257'il <u>Kh</u>&#257n and Bann&#363 in place of D&#299w&#257n Daulat R&#257i, but he earned unpopularity for his harsh treatment of the local <i>zam&#299nd&#257rs</i>.
