He was ambitious to succeed his father in the spiritual line, but the latter, as records Kesar Si&#7749gh Chhibbar, Ba&#7749s&#257val&#299n&#257m&#257, spoke : "He [Amar D&#257s] is my brother and to him I am entrusting the responsibility. . . . Him I have reckoned as capable of bearing the burden. " D&#257s&#363 kept quiet at the time, but, after the passing away of Gur&#363 A&#7749gad, as his duly anointed successor, Gur&#363 Amar D&#257s shifted to Goindv&#257l, he proclaimed himself Gur&#363 at Kha&#7693&#363r even against the remonstrances of his mother. Later he recanted and apologized to his mother who took him to Goindv&#257l. He made obeisance to Gur&#363 Amar D&#257s whose true disciple he remained thereafter.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Macauliffe, Max Arthur, The Sikh Religion.
