During the period after Band&#257 Si&#7749gh he commanded much esteem as a veteran fighter and as d&#299w&#257n, i. e. commissar in charge of rations and forage. In 1733 when Zakar&#299y&#257 Kh&#257n, governor of Lahore, decided to make it up with the Sikhs and sent his envoy, Subeg Si&#7749gh, with the offer of naw&#257bship and a j&#257g&#299r, the Sikh assembly first decided to confer the mantle of naw&#257bship upon Darb&#257r&#257 Si&#7749gh but he, according to Ratan Si&#7749gh Bha&#7749g&#363, Pr&#257ch&#299n Panth Prak&#257sh, excused himself arguing that the Sikhs should not compromise their claim to sovereignty by accepting a title from the Mughal rulers.
