The family later migrated to Chakk No. 38 Niz&#257mpur Dev&#257 Si&#7749ghv&#257l&#257 in the newly developed canal district of Shei<u>kh</u>&#363pur&#257, now in Pakistan. Dal Si&#7749gh remained illiterate, but had committed to memory several of the religious and historical compositions. He also listened regularly to the local <i>granth&#299</i> reading from the <i>Ak&#257l&#299</i>, a newspaper floated by Ak&#257l&#299 reformers in May 1920. He had already received the <i>p&#257hul</i> or vows of the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257.
