In 1899 the family migrated westward to Chakk No. 64 Nih&#257le&#257&#7751&#257, in the newly colonized Lyallpur district. Chet Si&#7749gh studied up to the 5th standard in the village school. He grew up into a handsome, tall and fair complexioned young man interested in manly sports. He took the vows of the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 in early manhood and participated in the liberation of Gurdw&#257r&#257 Bh&#257&#299 Jog&#257 Si&#7749gh at Pesh&#257war (5 February 1921). Returning home, he learnt that his younger brother Kehar Si&#7749gh had registered himself with the <i>jath&#257</i> of Bh&#257&#299 Lachhma&#7751 Si&#7749gh Dh&#257rov&#257l&#299 set to liberate Gurdw&#257r&#257 Janam Asth&#257n at Nank&#257&#7751&#257 S&#257hib.
