These documents are mostly certified copies, very few of them being the original ones. The Handlist in the Archives (Nos. 490-551) enumerates sixty-two documents in this collection, beginning from 9 March 1846 and contains correspondence of O. St. John, the British Resident in Kashm&#299r (No. 497); Col. Nisbet (No. 498) ; H. S. Barnes (No. 500) ; and Sir Frederick Currie (No. 501) - all relating to R&#257j&#257 Gul&#257b Si&#7749gh and Kashm&#299r. Copies of the treaty for the transfer of Kashm&#299r to R&#257j&#257 Gul&#257b Si&#7749gh by Viscount Hardinge, dated 16 March 1846 (No. 491) and the Deed, dated 18 February 1859 (No. 494) also form part of the collection. So is the copy of the award of Punjab Board of Administration dividing territory between R&#257j&#257 Jaw&#257har Si&#7749gh and Mot&#299 Si&#7749gh of Pu&#7751chh (No. 493). Among the documents relating to the &#7692ogr&#257 family are the Deed of Agreement, dated 15 Maghar 1877 Bk, whereby Kishor&#257 Si&#7749gh, Gul&#257b Si&#7749gh, Dhi&#257n Si&#7749gh and Suchet Si&#7749gh received the grant of the <i>ta'aluq&#257</i> of Jamm&#363 made to them by Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh (No. 503) and the Deed of Affirmation (undated) by Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Kha&#7771ak Si&#7749gh confirming all grants of estates, titles, etc. to Gul&#257b Si&#7749gh, Dhi&#257n Si&#7749gh, and Suchet Si&#7749gh (No. 504). The collection also contains a copy of the Deed of Grant by Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh to R&#257j&#257 Dhi&#257n Si&#7749gh conferring on him the special title of <i>R&#257j&#257</i> and the state of Bhimbar, etc. (No. 507). There is a confirmation by Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Kha&#7771ak Si&#7749gh of all grants and awards to R&#257j&#257 Dhi&#257n Si&#7749gh (No. 508). There is also a Deed of Grant by Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh to H&#299r&#257 Si&#7749gh, son of Dhi&#257n Si&#7749gh (No. 509), followed by Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh's instructions as to the payments to be made to H&#299r&#257 Si&#7749gh.</p> <p class="C1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The papers dealing with the Jamm&#363 chiefs contain the division of R&#257j&#257 Suchet Si&#7749gh's property between Gul&#257b Si&#7749gh and H&#299r&#257 Si&#7749gh (No. 514-15); Gul&#257b Si&#7749gh's correspondence with Waz&#299r Jaw&#257har Si&#7749gh concerning disputes, adjustment of dues of money and jewellery (Nos. 516-23); Gul&#257b Si&#7749gh's letter to Jaw&#257har Si&#7749gh (dated 7 Chet 1902 Bk) claiming the title of Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 as well as the hill territory from Jasro&#7789&#257 to Haz&#257r&#257 (No. 526); <i>robak&#257rs</i> of H. M. Lawrence to Jaw&#257har Si&#7749gh; <i>sanads</i> granted by Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Gul&#257b Si&#7749gh to various persons (Nos. 535-36 and 538); and a complaint of Jaw&#257har Si&#7749gh to the Chief Commissioner of the Punjab that he had suffered much at the hands of Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Gul&#257b Si&#7749gh (No. 541). Besides, the collection contains letters and <i>robak&#257rs</i> from the Lt. -Governor of the Punjab to R&#257j&#257 Amar Si&#7749gh of Pu&#7751chh and other hill chiefs on diverse matters. Totally, these documents reveal how the hill chiefs looked up to the British for help and for the redress of their complaints against each other.</p> </ol><p class="CONT">B. J.
