He was a man of wealth and influence, being the owner of a chain of printing presses. In his earlier career, he had served as d&#299w&#257n or household minister to Mah&#257r&#257&#7751&#299 Jind Kaur in whose cause he had attempted to raise disturbances just before the second Anglo-Sikh war for which he was deported from the Punjab to All&#257h&#257b&#257d where he was kept a political prisoner for seven years. In 1866, he set up &#256ft&#257b-i-Punjab press in Lahore and issued in Urdu a fortnightly law journal, Anw&#257r-ul-Shams. A branch of the press was opened at Ajmer where the R&#257jput&#257n&#257 government gazette used to be printed. In 1872, B&#363&#7789&#257 Si&#7749gh founded the newspaper, &#256ft&#257b-i-Punj&#257b (Urdu), generally critical of the government's policy towards Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Duleep Si&#7749gh. D&#299w&#257n B&#363&#7789&#257 Si&#7749gh was favourably disposed towards the K&#363k&#257 sect and applauded especially its pro-Duleep Si&#7749gh activity.
