One day Bh&#257&#299 B&#363l&#257 asked the Gur&#363 how he might serve the <i>sa&#7749gat</i>, for he could do little work physically. The Gur&#363, in the words of Bh&#257&#299 Man&#299 Si&#7749gh, <i>Sikh&#257&#7749 d&#299 Bhagat M&#257l&#257</i>, spoke : "Give discourses on the holy <i>b&#257&#7751&#299</i>. Besides, prepare copies of the <i>poth&#299</i>, breviary of hymns, for distribution among Sikhs. Do not ask for any payment for your labour, though you may accept what is voluntarily offered to you. This shall be your <i>sev&#257</i>, i. e. service. " Bh&#257&#299 B&#363l&#257 adhered to the Gur&#363's direction and became a favourite Sikh of his. According to Gi&#257n&#299 Gi&#257n Si&#7749gh, <i>Tw&#257r&#299<u>kh</u> Gur&#363 <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257</i>, Bh&#257&#299 B&#363l&#257 was one of those who, led by Bh&#257&#299 Je&#7789h&#257 (later Gur&#363 R&#257m D&#257s), went to the Mu<u>gh</u>al court at Lahore in the time of Gur&#363 Amar D&#257s when complaints had been laid before Emperor Akbar about the Gur&#363's teaching refuting the Hindus' traditional belief and practices.
