One of his ancestors, Bh&#257r&#257 Mall, who lived in the village of Sukkarchakk, in Gujr&#257&#7749w&#257l&#257 district, now in Pakistan, had been initiated into the Sikh faith by the Seventh Gur&#363, Gur&#363 Har Rai. Bu&#7693&#7693h&#257 Si&#7749gh received the rites of amrit at the hands of Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh himself and fought in battles under him and under Band&#257 Si&#7749gh Bah&#257dur. He constructed a big house at Sukkarchakk and acquired considerable influence in those turbulent times. He was elected the village chaudhar&#299 or chief. He was a daring horseman, and there were many legends current about his adventures on his favourite piebald mare called Des&#299. It is said that on the back of Des&#299, he swam across the R&#257v&#299, Chen&#257b and Jehlum rivers as many as fifty times. The dauntless warrior had on his body scars of scores of wounds by sword, spear and gun. He died in 1718.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

S&#363r&#299, Sohan L&#257l, 'Umd&#257t-ut-Tw&#257r&#299kh.
