She was married on 18 February 1554 to Bh&#257&#299 Je&#7789h&#257 (later Gur&#363 R&#257m D&#257s), a So&#7693h&#299 Khatr&#299 belonging to Lahore, then in Goindv&#257l rendering voluntary service in the construction of the B&#257ol&#299 S&#257hib. After marriage, the couple remained in Goindv&#257l serving the Gur&#363. From Goindv&#257l Bh&#257&#299 Je&#7789h&#257 was deputed by the Gur&#363 to go and establish a habitation (present-day Amritsar) on a piece of land gifted, according to one version, by Emperor Akbar to B&#299b&#299 Bh&#257n&#299 at the time of his visit to Gur&#363 Amar D&#257s. Three sons, Prith&#299 Chand (1558), Mah&#257dev (1560) and (Gur&#363) Arjan Dev (1563) were born to her. A popular anecdote mentioned in old chronicles describes how devotedly B&#299b&#299 Bh&#257n&#299 served her father. One morning, it is said, as Gur&#363 Amar D&#257s was absorbed in meditation, B&#299b&#299 Bh&#257n&#299 noticed that one of the legs of the low wooden seat on which the Gur&#363 sat was about to give way. She at once put forward her hand to support the stool. As the Gur&#363 ended his devotions, he discovered how her hand was bleeding from the injury it had sustained. He blessed her saying that her progeny would inherit the gur&#363ship. B&#299b&#299 Bh&#257n&#299 died at Goindv&#257l on 9 April 1598.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Bhall&#257, Sar&#363p D&#257s, Mahim&#257 Prak&#257sh.
