He lost his mother at the age of three. On the opening of the Lower Chen&#257b Canal Colony during the last decade of the 19th century, the family-father and son- migrated to Chakk No. 38 Dev&#257 Si&#7749ghv&#257l&#257 in Shei<u>kh</u>&#363pur&#257 district where young Bhagv&#257n Si&#7749gh assisted his father carrying errands. When he grew up, he went abroad to China in search of fortune, but came back after three years, and received the rites of <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 initiation at Sr&#299 Ak&#257l Ta<u>kh</u>t S&#257hib.
