Bh&#257g Si&#7749gh learnt to read Gurmukh&#299 letters and the Gur&#363 Granth S&#257hib at the village gurdw&#257r&#257. As he grew up, he made a pilgrimage to N&#257nde&#7693. Returning to the north, he visited &#362n&#257, now in Himachal Pradesh, where he became a disciple of B&#257b&#257 S&#257hib Si&#7749gh Bed&#299, a descendant of Gur&#363 N&#257nak in direct line. After a few years, he, at the bidding of B&#257b&#257 S&#257hib Si&#7749gh, went to preach in the Po&#7789hoh&#257r region. He established himself at Kur&#299, a village on the bank of a small stream, Gumr&#257h, 8 km from R&#257walpi&#7751&#7693&#299. Such was his repute for piety that Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh once came to visit him and seek his blessing. B&#257b&#257 B&#299r Si&#7749gh of Naura&#7749g&#257b&#257d, who himself emerged as a figure of great sanctity in Sikh times, also sought advice from him.
