The family originally belonged to Far&#299dko&#7789 state, from where Bel&#257 Si&#7749gh's grandfather, Bh&#257&#299 Sobh&#257, had migrated to Kart&#257rpur where he served in Gur&#363 k&#257 La&#7749gar run by local mahants, who in recognition of his services had allotted some agricultural land to him. Bel&#257 Si&#7749gh was the first in the family to receive the Kh&#257ls&#257-p&#257hul. He engaged himself in agriculture but also continued to serve in Gur&#363 k&#257 La&#7749gar. For some reason the mahants, towards the end of the century, resumed the land granted to the family. Bel&#257 Si&#7749gh with his wife and two sons migrated to Chakk No. 10 Thoth&#299&#257&#7749 in the newly developed irrigation district of Sheikh&#363pur&#257 in western Punjab where he earned his living by ploughing land taken on annual rent basis. At the outset of the Gurdw&#257r&#257 reform movement, Bel&#257 Si&#7749gh with some other Sikhs of Thoth&#299&#257&#7749 joined the jath&#257 of Bh&#257&#299 Lachma&#7751 Si&#7749gh Dh&#257rov&#257l&#299 which was massacred on 20 February 1921 at Gurdw&#257r&#257 Janam Asth&#257n Nank&#257&#7751&#257 S&#257hib.

        See NANK&#256N&#256 S&#256HIB MASSACRE

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Shamsher, Gurbakhsh Si&#7749gh, Shah&#299d&#299 J&#299van.
