A devoted Sikh, B&#257j Si&#7749gh had received the rites of initiation at the hands of Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh himself. He accompanied the Gur&#363 to the Deccan in 1708 and was one of the five Sikhs sent by him to the Punjab with Band&#257 Si&#7749gh Bah&#257dur. He took part in all of Band&#257 Si&#7749gh's major campaigns. For his fearlessness in battle, he came to be known as B&#257j Bah&#257dur (<i>bah&#257dur</i>, lit. brave). In the battle of Sirhind fought at Chappar Chi&#7771&#299 in May 1710, B&#257j Si&#7749gh was in command of the right wing of Band&#257 Si&#7749gh's army. He faced Naw&#257b Waz&#299r <u>Kh</u>&#257n in the battle striking his horse down with a lance. As the battle was won, B&#257j Si&#7749gh was named administrator of the town.
