He learnt reading and writing in Gurmukh&#299 script from the village <i>granth&#299</i> and took the initiation of the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 at the age of 18. He was of a lissom athletic build interested in village sports and was also a member of the village holy choir. He attended the Ak&#257l&#299 congregation at Dh&#257rov&#257l&#299 on 1-3 October 1920.
