Nothing is known about his parentage or the date and place of his birth. He had arrived at the village in the company of a <i>N&#257&#7749g&#257 s&#257dh&#363</i> as a boy of 10 or 12 years and had stayed on in the local <i>gurdw&#257r&#257</i>. He had learnt to read Gurmukh&#299 and the holy text from the <i>granth&#299</i> whom he replaced after the latter had left. On the night of 19-20 February 1921, he was participating in an <i>akha&#7751&#7693 p&#257&#7789h</i>, unbroken reading of the Gur&#363 Granth S&#257hib, in a neighbouring village, when a <i>jath&#257</i> of reformist Ak&#257l&#299s under the leadership of Bh&#257&#299 Lachma&#7751 Si&#7749gh passed that way. The <i>jath&#257</i> was proceeding to Nank&#257&#7751&#257 S&#257hib. Bachittar Si&#7749gh had another <i>granth&#299</i> replace him on the <i>akha&#7751&#7693 p&#257&#7789h</i> roster and joined the <i>jath&#257</i> going to Nank&#257&#7751&#257 S&#257hib.
