The wordb&#257bak, from Persian, means faithful. As says the Gurbil&#257s Chhev&#299&#7749 P&#257tsh&#257h&#299, B&#257bak was, at the death of Satt&#257 and Balva&#7751&#7693, who used to recite sacred hymns for the Gur&#363, asked to perform the obsequies for them under their (Muslim) rites. B&#257bak, it is said, dug the graves for the deceased on the bank of the River R&#257v&#299 and after the burial service, performed the k&#299rtan on the site where sat Gur&#363 Hargobind. To quote the Gurbil&#257s again, he took part in the battle of Amritsar in 1629 during which he assisted in the evacuation of the Gur&#363's family to Jhab&#257l. Going by the Gurbil&#257s account, Gur&#363 Hargobind, before he departed the world, asked B&#257bak to return to Amritsar. As bidden by the Gur&#363, B&#257bak retired to Amritsar where he died in 1642.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Gurbil&#257s Chhev&#299n P&#257tsh&#257h&#299.
