Before his initiation into the Sikh faith, he lived in a <i>dharams&#257l&#257</i> at Shuj&#257'b&#257d which received a grant of Rs. 100 from the government. This grant reached him every six months, but he used to disburse it, both cash and kind, to the needy within a day or two, and himself subsisted on alms for the remaining period until the next grant was received. He was well familiar with musical measures or <i>r&#257gas, </i> and B&#257b&#257 <u>Kh</u>ud&#257 Si&#7749gh called him A&#7789h (eight) R&#257g&#257 Si&#7749gh. He knew the entire 1430-page scripture by heart, and could recite the whole of it within 16 <i>pahars</i> or 48 hours. Once he performed the feat in the presence of B&#257b&#257 S&#257hib Si&#7749gh Bed&#299 of &#362n&#257. Around 1900 Bk/AD 1843, he came to B&#257b&#257 B&#299r Si&#7749gh at Naura&#7749g&#257b&#257d.
