When Sh&#257h Shuj&#257', the king of Afghanistan, was dethroned, he fled towards the Punjab. At Attock he was captured by the governor, Jah&#257&#7749dad <u>Kh</u>&#257n, who sent him to Kashm&#299r to be handed over to his brother 'At&#257 Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n. Kashm&#299r was coveted by Fateh <u>Kh</u>&#257n, the K&#257bul Waz&#299r, as well as by Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh. Both set up a joint expedition and their armies defeated 'At&#257 Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n who was replaced by Fateh <u>Kh</u>&#257n's real brother, 'Azim <u>Kh</u>&#257n, as governor of Kashm&#299r. Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh's prize was Sh&#257h Shuj&#257' who was freed from 'At&#257 Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n's custody by the Mah&#257r&#257j&#257's men and brought to Lahore as his guest.
