The first to arrive to see the child's face was grandmother, M&#257t&#257 Ga&#7749g&#257, and she was the most rejoiced of all the family. Gur&#363 Hargobind, to quote the Gurbil&#257s again, gave him the name A&#7751&#299 R&#257i (a&#7751i, Skt. an&#299k = troops, army; r&#257i=r&#257j&#257 or chief), Lord of Armies. As he grew up, A&#7751&#299 R&#257i remained absorbed within himself most of the time. He never married and lived the life of a recluse. All we learn from the biographer of Gur&#363 Hargobind is that he carried the conch at the funeral of his stepmother (M&#257t&#257 Marv&#257h&#299), his stepbrother, S&#363raj Mal, giving his shoulder to the bier. A&#7751&#299 R&#257i died at Kiratpur where a shrine honouring his memory still exists.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Gurbil&#257s Chhev&#299&#7749 P&#257tsh&#257h&#299. Patiala, 1970

Gi&#257n Si&#7749gh, Gi&#257n&#299, Tw&#257r&#299kh Gur&#363 Kh&#257ls&#257 [Reprint].
