In 1794, he conquered Kum&#257o&#7749 and began extending Gurkh&#257 dominions westwards. He subdued the Ga&#7771hv&#257l state lying between the Ga&#7749ga and the Yamun&#257. In 1805 he crossed the River Yamun&#257 and overran most of the Shiml&#257 hill states lying between the Yamun&#257 and the Sutlej. The R&#257j&#257 of Bil&#257spur solicited Amar Si&#7749gh's help against Sa&#7749s&#257r Chand, establishing his authority over the K&#257&#7749g&#7771&#257 hills. On hearing the news of Amar Si&#7749gh's advance, Sa&#7749s&#257r Chand raised the siege of Bil&#257spur and retired. Amar Si&#7749gh crossed the rivers Sutlej and Be&#257s unopposed and defeated Sa&#7749s&#257r Chand at Mahal Mor&#299&#257&#7749 in May 1806. He then laid siege to the K&#257&#7749g&#7771&#257 Fort. The R&#257j&#257 sought the help of Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh who drove away the Gurkh&#257s but himself occupied the Fort. Amar Si&#7749gh established himself at Ark&#299, near Shiml&#257, and made overtures to the British soliciting their support against Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh. They rejected the proposal. During the Gurkh&#257 war of 1814-16, Amar Si&#7749gh in vain asked for Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh's help against the British. There being no response from the Mah&#257r&#257j&#257, Amar Si&#7749gh surrendered to the British who allowed him to retire unmolested to Nepal.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

S&#363r&#299, Sohan L&#257l, 'Umd&#257t ut-Tw&#257r&#299kh. Lahore, 1885-89

Griffin, Lepel, Ranjit Singh.
