Formerly in the employ of Prince Mu'azzam (later Emperor Bah&#257dur Sh&#257h), he probably came to Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh sometime during the period 1687-94 when the prince, having fallen from the favour of his father, Aura&#7749gz&#299b, was under internment.
