In 1691, he was despatched by M&#299&#257&#7749 <u>Kh</u>&#257n, the viceroy of Jamm&#363, to K&#257&#7749g&#7771&#257 for collecting arrears of tribute from the hill chiefs. R&#257j&#257 Kirp&#257l Chand K&#257&#7789och of K&#257&#7749g&#7771&#257 and R&#257j&#257 Dy&#257l of Bijha&#7771val submitted to Alif <u>Kh</u>&#257n, but not R&#257j&#257 Bh&#299m Chand of Kahl&#363r. Bh&#299m Chand enlisted the support of several of the chieftains against Alif <u>Kh</u>&#257n. He also requested Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh for help. The combined force reached Nadau&#7751, on the bank of the River Be&#257s, 32 km southeast of K&#257&#7749g&#7771&#257. Kirp&#257l Chand Ka&#7789och and R&#257j&#257 Dy&#257l sided with the Mu<u>gh</u>al general. The battle in which Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh himself took part was fought on 20 March 1691. Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh described the action in his <i>Bachitra N&#257&#7789ak</i> in vivid and rousing verse. Alif <u>Kh</u>&#257n fled in utter disarray "without being able to fold up his camp.
