Written in AD 1851, the only known manuscript of the work was available in the Sikh Reference Library, Amritsar, until it perished during the Blue Star action in the holy premises in 1984. The author Surjan D&#257s (father: B&#257gh Si&#7749gh, mother: Gul&#257b Dev&#299), a disciple of Sant &#7788ahil D&#257s who was in the Bhagat Bhagv&#257n&#299e sect of the Ud&#257s&#299s, established his gadd&#299at Ajnev&#257l, in Gujr&#257&#7749w&#257l&#257 district, now in Pakistan. Surjan D&#257s preached the ideal of a casteless (a = without; j&#257t = caste) society and thus came to be called Aj&#257t and his followers Aj&#257tpanth&#299. Another of his works was Surjan Bodh which is held in the Pañj&#257b University Library, Cha&#7751&#7693&#299ga&#7771h, under MS. No. 111. The poetry of Surjan D&#257s is uneven, though he tries to keep close to the gurb&#257&#7751&#299 idiom. Transience of the world, man's forgetfulness of God and the importance of n&#257m are the principal themes of Aj&#257t S&#257gar. Gur&#363 N&#257nak has been depicted in this work as "the destroyer of evil.
